In 1605, the monks of the Chartreuse received a manuscript containing the formula of an "elixir" from the Marshal of Estrées. From 1764, the Green Charterhouse is elaborated in the monastery of the Grande-Chartreuse, then from 1838, the Charterhouse. The monks settled in Tarragona in Spain in 1903 following their expulsion from France. The Chartreux Fathers returned to France to distil in Marseille in 1921 and in Voiron in 1935. The Distillery of Voiron is now the only place of production of liqueurs. To make the famous liqueurs, the monks used 130 plants that they macerated in alcohol before being distilled in stills to produce alcohol. Distilled honey, sugar syrup and decoctions of plants are then added to the different alcoholates that will be blended before ageing in oak tuns.
