Stretching south of a line from Greenock, north of Glasgow, to Dundee, County Perth, this area of rolling hills and rugged coastline enjoys a mild climate. Distilled sometimes three times, the Lowlands are generally dry and light. They are also marked by subtle floral and herbaceous notes. At the end of the last century there were more than twenty distilleries in operation in the Lowlands. Nowadays there are only two, Auchentoshan north of Glasgow and Glenkinchie east of Edinburgh, the only Lowlands distillery open to the public.
