The appellation area is located south of the Northern Cotes du Rhône, on the right bank of the Rhône, in the commune of Saint-Péray and in a district of the commune of Toulaud, in the Ardèche department. The presence of vines in Saint-Péray can be attested to as early as the High Middle Ages.
The AOC of Saint-Péray wines benefits from two types of terroir: the granite slope of Cornas continues on the commune of Saint-Péray to the Biguet district in Toulaud. This hillside is separated from a limestone massif dominated by the remains of the Château de Crussol by the Mialan valley. The tormented hillsides and a deep valley create a cool microclimate in a warmer continental region.
The Saint-Péray wines are white, dry and aromatic, always with great finesse and elegance. For both still and sparkling wines, the grape varieties are Marsanne and Roussanne. The sparkling wines are made by second fermentation in the bottle according to the Champagne method. Still wines are vinified after a short pressing and fermentation partly in new barrels, partly in stainless steel tanks. One will note in this appellation the quality of the work of the Domaine Alain Voge and the unavoidable house Mr. Chapoutier.
