The Clare Valley in Australia's southern wine region extends north of Adelaide, more than 100 kilometers from the state capital, in the Mount Lofty Ranges.
Most of the vines are planted at heights between 400 and 500 meters above sea level. The variation in and exposure to the sun allows for the production of distinct wines.
The terroir is surprisingly favorable to the white grape varieties thanks to the refreshing breezes from the high altitude sites. In the Clare Valley, viticulture is ancient, dating back to the early 19th century. Today, large Australian wine companies still rub shoulders with small family estates.
Riesling is the specialty of the Clare Valley. It is dry, with citrus and lime aromas, and is characterized by high acidity. Some have ripe lemon or toast flavors. Riesling has a certain mineral character, especially in wines from the Polish Hill River.
The Clare Valley wines made from Sémillon are highly appreciated for their honey aromas.
