The vineyard Côtes-de-Gascogne occupies the same area as the Armagnac, a brandy still produced in the region, but whose volumes produced have declined in favor of local wines (which have become IGP). Under the influence of a mild oceanic climate, it is quite watery in the west, drier in the east, especially in summer. In the west, the subsoil of tawny sands is of marine origin, covered with boulbènes; it gradually gives way to molasses in the east, a rock resulting from the erosion of the Pyrenees. The soils are either stony and calcareous or clayey and deep, retaining water well.
The main cultivated grape varieties are white: colombard and ugni blanc, the grape varieties of Armagnac. Generally associated, by the sauvignon and the chardonnay, they give lively whites with exuberant fruitiness. The gros and petit manseng complete this range, to deliver mellow wines that are also tonic and fruity.
