Somontano is an appellation located at the foot of the Pyrenees, on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, in the region of Huesca. The production area is divided into three distinct zones: the mountains, the Somontano itself and the plain.
The climate of Somontano is characterized by very cold winters and hot summers, with abrupt temperature changes in late spring and autumn. The white wines of Somontano are made from about fifteen different varieties of grapes, partly foreign and partly local such as Moristel, Tempranillo or Parreleta. The Somontano vineyard covers 4,400 hectares within the appellation area.
The variety and quality of Somontano wines are particularly well represented by the Bodegas Osca, Pirineos, Enate or Irius.
