Over the last thirty years, the Ribera del Duero has emerged from the shadows and intends to compete with Rioja for the title of appellation producing the best wines in Spain. The DO Ribera del Duero takes its roots in the old heart of Spanish Castile, Castilla-León. This region enjoys extraordinary vineyards located in the Ribera del Duero. The most renowned wine is Vega Sicilia, which has been inducted into the circle of wines of international fame since the 19th century.
The vineyards rise on the heights of the Meseta, a high plateau of Spain, 900 meters above sea level, on soils rich in chalk and schist ideal for viticulture. The Douro River provides irrigation for the plantations. The mountains encircling the plateau prevent the sea air from rushing inland. The vineyards have a continental climate, tempered only by the altitude. The microclimate combining altitude, sunshine and the difference in degrees between day and night contributes to the maturity of the grapes, which keep their powerful aromas and lively acidity.
The vineyards are generally composed only of Tempranillo, also known as Tinto Fino or Tinto País. The presence of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec or Merlot testifies to the considerable influence of the Vega Sicilia estate, which has been cultivating these varieties for many years.
