700 kilometers south of Mendoza, the Rio Negro belongs to the immense area of Patagonia, the southern province of Argentina. A traditional wine-growing region, the Rio Negro valley is the most famous wine-growing area in Patagonia. It is from the 20th century and the arrival of European immigrants that the region developed its wine-growing potential.
This valley, fertile land in the heart of the Patagonian Desert, is an agricultural area (of apples, pears and vines) formed by the detour of the Rio Negro River by British settlers in the 19th century. This wine region is surprisingly low for the country: only 250 meters above sea level. However, the climate is cooler than in the rest of the country. The high temperature range between day and night lengthens the ripening period of the grapes, allowing the wine to find a balance between lively acidity and powerful fruit aromas.
The Rio Negro Valley is distinguished by 3 subsets: the Alto Valley, the Valley Medio and the Valley Inferior. The viticulture is mainly done in the Alto Valley.
The Rio Negro Valley produces drier wines than the Mendoza region, but no less intense. These wines are lively, structured and have character. The Rio Negro region is known for its fresh white wines, especially its quality Sauvignon Blancs.
