The vineyards of the Loire Valley extend over nearly 70,000 hectares of vines, in four wine regions: the Pays Nantais, Anjou, Touraine and the Centre. They produce between three and four million hectoliters each year.
The third largest wine-growing region in France, along with Bordeaux and Burgundy, the Loire Valley produces excellent red wines. The Loire Wines are mainly grouped around two interprofessions : Les Vins de Loire and Les Vins du Centre-Loire, but some appellations prefer to remain independent, such as the Côteaux du Vendômois, the wines of Bourgeuil or Valençay.
There are more than 80 different appellations in the Loire Valley, 48 of which are Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) and Appellations d'Origine Protégée (AOP).
