The AOC Sancerre is produced in the Centre-Loire sub-region, in the natural area "les collines du Sancerrois". The vineyard covers 2,800 hectares, on the right bank of the river, in the north-east of the Cher department. This AOC produces 164 000 hectoliters of wine annually.
The lands hosting the Sancerre vineyard are often strongly sloping. The conditions mark the wines of complexity, echoing their vineyard. These hills of Sancerre spare the terroirs from strong winds and rain, which is more conducive to the good maturity of the grapes. In total, 14 wine-growing communities make up the AOC Sancerre, from Montigny to Bannay. As for the whole Centre-Loire sub-region, sauvignon is the only grape variety used for the production of white wines, and pinot noir for the production of red and rosé wines.
The wines of the AOC Sancerre present an important diversity reflecting the great variety of soil types hosting the vines. The white earth wines develop with age but offer opulent aromas from their youth. Depending on the vintage, the reds can be very interesting and also keep well.
