The Vaucluse, a department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, takes its name from the Latin "Vallis Clausa", the closed valley. The attribution of the department name also comes from the village of La Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
In spite of the drought of this geographical area, the vineyards have been able to resist the most difficult climatic conditions. The vin de pays du Vaucluse is a "vin d'appellation départementale". It is part of the great regional wine of the gates of the Mediterranean.
The department nourishes a great culture of red wine, faithful to the reputation of the AOC Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes de Venise. 36% of the production is devoted to reds. The Vaucluse has its know-how outside the traditional grape varieties syrah, cinsault, carignan and cabernet-sauvignon, with the local varieties chasan, marsanne, roussanne, vermentino, tempranillo, caladoc and marselan.
