Madiran

The Madiran AOC extends over 1,200 hectares of vineyards straddling three departments: the Gers, the Hautes-Pyrénées and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

A reference wine for the pilgrimages of Santiago de Compostela, it is still today one of the most renowned wines of the Southwest region, with an average annual production of 65,600 hectoliters, in red wine only. 

 

The climate of the region is under the oceanic influence of the Atlantic. Winters are mild, and rainfall is generally well distributed until the arrival of summer, which is hot and particularly sunny. The soils composed mainly of limestone, clay and silica, constitute a pleasant environment for the red grape varieties dedicated to the production of the AOC Madiran. 

 

Its ruby and dark red wines, almost black sometimes, are mainly made from tannat as well as from cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and more locally from fer servadou. Most often aged in vats, Madiran wines are very full-bodied and so tannic that they must spend at least 12 months in the cellar before they can be marketed. The two Cabernets bring their roundness and complementary aromas in the mouth.
