The appellation is reserved for red wines produced in the department of Tarn, in the cantons of Albi, Cadalen, Cordes, Casteneau-de-Montmiral, Carmaux, Gaillac, Graulhet, Lavaur, Lisle-sur-Tarn, Monestiès, Rabastens, Réalmont, Salvagnac, Saint-Paul-Cap-de-Joux, Valdèries, Vaour and Villefranche-d'Albigeois. The minimum acquired alcoholic strength by volume is 9.5% vol.
The red wines present a nose and a mouth with fruity and spicy aromas. The round tannins give them a light and easy to drink character. The main red grape varieties are cabernet franc and sauvignon, duras, fer servadou, gamay, merlot, jurançon, blue portuguese and syrah.
