Marlborough is clearly New Zealand's most important wine region, producing more than half of the country's wines. Today, Marlborough is home to the largest number of wineries in the country. There has been a recent surge in the creation of wineries as local producers seek to set themselves apart from their neighbouring rivals on the world stage.
The plains are divided into two parallel valleys: Wairau and Awatere. Stretching from northeast to southeast, they follow the course of two rivers that flow into the Pacific Ocean. The vineyards of both valleys are subject to the risk of frost.
The star grape variety of Marlborough is the Pinot Noir to produce high quality wines. These wines have structured tannins, and offer a palette of red fruit flavors, especially cherry.
