The Bairrada is a Portuguese wine region located in the central-western part of the country on the coastal area between the ocean and the Serra do Buçaco. It is bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the east by the Dão region. The name of this wine-growing area comes from the word "Barro" (clay soil) which explains the nature of the soil present in the region.
The climate of the Bairrada is strongly influenced by the presence of the Atlantic Ocean and is characterized by fairly mild temperatures and abundant rainfall. The wines produced in this region are seductive, rich and fragrant, with a strong tannic base.
The reds, with a garnet or ruby color that evolves with age towards brown reflections, represent almost 90% of the production. They are made from grape varieties such as Baga, Castelão, Touriga nacional, Alfrocheiro or Camarate.
