The appellation Vino de la Tierra de Mallorca is located in the archipelago of the Balearic Islands, on the large island of Mallorca. It is an area of about 600 ha relatively protected from the cold north winds thanks to the Sierra de Tramuntana, and which favours a microclimate in the center of the island. The climate, described as mild, is typically Mediterranean, with very high temperatures in summer (over 30 °C) and low temperatures in winter (rarely below 5 °C). Precipitation is usually accompanied by storms and is concentrated in autumn. The relief is not very hilly and the vineyards are located at an altitude not exceeding 200 meters above sea level.
The most common grape varieties used for red wines are Callet, Manto Negro, and Fogoneu, which are native varieties, but also include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir. The production is about 12,000 hl for red wines. The result is red wines, lightly full-bodied, warm and velvety, which thanks to the Manto Negro grape variety have a good ageing capacity.
