The vast vineyards of Castilla-La Mancha occupy the central Iberian plateau, south of Madrid, the capital. It is the largest vineyard in the world and the country's winemaking lung, providing more than half of the national production.
Alongside mass production, powerful red wines are now produced in still little-known appellations such as Valdepeñas, Méntrida, Vinos de Madrid or Manchuela, from varieties that are well adapted to the region's hot summers. Tempranillo, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Bobal or Syrah are at the origin of the best red wines of Castilla-La Mancha, which are often generous, warm and good value for money.
