Bierzo is one of the rising stars of wine-growing Spain, thanks to the arrival of important investments and innovation efforts in the 1990s in its vineyards. Within the Castilla-León region, the DO of Bierzo extends to the north, on the eastern edges of Galicia. This wine appellation can be divided into two distinct areas: the Bierzo Alto, a land of mountains rich in minerals that host the vineyards on its slopes, and the Bierzo Bajo, which consists of a wide green plain.
The Bierzo has a climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The wine produced in the Bierzo is lighter and fresher than in the rest of the region. The Cantabrian mountain range to the north shelters the vineyards and gives the grapes the opportunity to reach full maturity. The soils are composed mainly of granite and slate. These characteristics give Bierzo wines their distinctive minerality.
Mencia, a local grape variety, dominates by far the wine production of Bierzo. The producers obtain a light, fresh red wine with an astonishing acidity for a red.
