Toro is located in Castilla y León, in the northwest of Spain, near Portugal. The region receives its name from the city of Toro, an ancient city settled along the Duero River (Douro) and one of the centers of Mudejar art. Wine-growing is a very old activity in this province. In fact, the wines of Toro were very popular and very appreciated by the kings of Spain since at least the 13th century.
The vineyards are spread out on a high plateau at heights of between 600 and 800 meters. The region of Toro has a continental climate that implies extreme temperature differences between seasons. The Duero River is the essential source of water for the vineyards, which do not go far from this water point so as not to risk their survival. The hot days, the meager rainfall and the strong sunshine make it possible to produce red wines that are powerful and strong in alcohol content.
Toro is home to the Tempranillo grape variety, in fact a clone of this grape variety called here tinta de Toro, which has a slightly thicker skin. Often aged in oak barrels, the red wines are full-bodied, powerful, high in alcohol thanks to the sunshine and the early harvest, low in acidity and dark in color. Toro wines in the Reserva and Gran Reserva categories have vibrant colors and are intense in tannins in their youth. They have an interesting potential for aging in bottle.
