The Ribera del Duero D.O. Denominacion de Origen. Located in the region of Castilla y León it covers 19,000 hectares straddling the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria and Segovia (the region best known for its red wines).
The continental climate, with hot, dry summers and harsh winters with negative temperatures, may be a concern for the vineyard due to the spring frosts. The vineyard extends on a gentle slope for 110 kilometers straddling the Duero River.
The complex soils are composed on the lower parts of marl and clay and on the upper parts of limestone and chalk. The terroir is about 80% chalk. The vines are planted 90% by Trempanillo, but other varieties are allowed such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The appellation produces exclusively red wines with a minimum of 75% Trempanillo. The wines are intense, deep and complex with good acidity, the grape variety supports very well the ageing in barrels.
