As in many regions of Spain, it seems that it was the Romans who introduced the vine. The wine of Madrid was even praised in the literature of the 15th century.
Then, easy-care and high-yield varieties were replanted, namely Grenache. The region experienced a new boom in the 1990s.
Today, this Denomination encompasses 55 municipalities. It is divided into 3 very different sub-areas: Arganda, Navalcarnero, San Martín de Valdeiglesias.
There are two types of vineyards: the classic Tempranillo of the plains, often supplemented by French grape varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot; and the hillside Grenache, which is becoming increasingly important - see Méntrida and Jiménez-Landi, with their Comando G, which are revolutionizing the Spanish Grenache landscape!
