This natural sweet wine is the only one in France to benefit from the mention grand cru. The banyuls grand cru comes exclusively from four communes in the Pyrénées-Orientales: Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer and Cerbère, which border the Côte Vermeille, at the eastern end of the Pyrenees.
Overlooking the Mediterranean, the vineyard is planted on arid schist soils, clinging to steep slopes traditionally terraced.
Grand cru banyuls differs from banyuls by its blend, which highlights Grenache noir - a grape variety that accounts for at least 75% of the vineyard's vines - as well as by its maturing: an ageing process that must take place in the woods, which cannot be less than thirty months. The wines are made from the best vintages. They are concentrated, powerful and suitable for very long ageing.
