The vineyards and wines of Brulhois have their origins in the Gallo-Roman period. At the beginning of the 14th century, under the English occupation, this terroir exported 48,000 hl of wine via the river. Then the country of Brulhois gradually fell into oblivion after the Revolution, as it was divided into 3 departments and then into 2 regions.
However, the vine remaining attached to this land, the vineyard has known a revival for 30 years. In 1984, the recognition as an appellation of origin consecrated the wines of Brulhois. They are produced in 3 departments, Lot-et-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne and a small part of the Gers, on 312 hectares.
The climate is rather dry in summer and early autumn, which favours the ripening of the grapes. In addition to Merlot, the basic grape variety, the grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Malbec and Fer Servadou. The red wine has long been called "black wine" because of its very dark color due to the presence of tannat.
