The AOC Château-Grillet is produced by the only estate of the same name, which extends over part of the two communes of Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône and Vérin, in the Loire department. With a surface area of barely 4 hectares, this monopoly appellation is the smallest appellation in France, with a very confidential production of 85 hectoliters per year.
Included in the AOC Condrieu appellation area, this small vineyard grows on the same terroir of steep granite terraces, but is distinguished by its location in altitude, specifically on the valley side of a bend of the Rhone exposed south, and therefore particularly sunny and sheltered from the Mistral coming from the North.
Born from the use of a single grape variety, Viognier, Château-Grillet is then aged for at least 2 years in wooden barrels of "several wines", again distinguishing it from the wines of Condrieu. The dry white wines produced are therefore very different in the end. Rare and rather expensive, the white wines of Château-Grillet, with a golden yellow robe, are more concentrated and more intense in aroma, always based on the violet, apricot and peach aromas characteristic of the viognier.
