The regional AOC coteaux-bourguignons is produced throughout the territory of Greater Burgundy which extends from the Auxerrois, in the Yonne, to the Beaujolais included, on the territory of 300 communes. It replaces the Bourgogne-grand-ordinaire, which was named to distinguish it from the prestigious crus of the Côte-d'Or - a traditional denomination that was in danger of disappearing because of its name, which today is of little value. The Coteaux-Bourguignons appellation produces red, clairet and rosé wines, and white wines. While it uses the classic grape varieties of the region, pinot noir and chardonnay, gamay is often the majority and some local varieties in sharp decline are admitted.
