The Muscat-de-Rivesaltes AOC is produced in the territories of Rivesaltes, Banyuls and Maury, covering an area of 5,300 hectares. It produces about 120,000 hectoliters per year. Its climate, characteristic of Roussillon, is Mediterranean. Like the AOC Rivesaltes, the soils of this appellation are diverse and varied: granite, gneiss, brown and black schists, clay-limestone, sandy-clay molasses and stony terraces.
For the wines of this AOC, only two grape varieties are used: Muscat à petits grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie. Muscat-de-Rivesaltes, like all the Natural Sweet Wines, is produced by mutage, which consists in stopping the alcoholic fermentation of the must by adding wine alcohol at 96° minimum. This traditional operation allows better conservation of the sugars and valorization of the natural aromas specific to the grape varieties used.
Recognizable by its pale gold robe, Muscat-de-Rivesaltes is characterized by muscat and floral aromas with a light, fruity and fine character. With a rather fast bottling, the fresh fruit aromas are all the more present. On the other hand, it can be kept in the cellar for quite a long time. Its robe then becomes amber and its taste increases with age.
