The AOC Côtes-du-Rhône-villages is derived from the AOC Côtes-du-Rhône. It is a mention that aims to prioritize the immense and relatively opaque production of the Côtes-du-Rhône, by setting up a system to enhance the value of local terroirs.
Thus, 95 communes, all located in the southern vineyards of the Rhone Valley, can claim the mention "villages", and 38 of them can even add their name after this mention. The approximately 8,000 hectares of vineyard identified are subject to constraints in terms of production (yield), grape varieties (increase in Grenache and balance of complementary proportions), winemaking (alcoholic degree) or delimitation of terroirs.
The AOC Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages, 98% of which are vinified as reds, are consequently wines of very consistent quality, elegant on the palate, with finer yet more full-bodied aromas, recognized for their character and more pronounced tannins. They also have a better ageing potential.
