A journey through the know-how of Port wine

A journey through the know-how of Port wine

A German heritage in Portuguese lands

The history of Kopke begins with the arrival of the German Kopke family in Portugal in the 17th century. Settling in Porto, they launched into the wine trade and in 1781 decided to acquire vineyards in the Douro Valley, the birthplace of Port. This bold approach allows them to control the entire production process, from the vine to the bottle, thus guaranteeing perfect control of quality.

Exceptional vineyards in the Douro Valley

The Kopke Vineyards lie on the steep slopes of the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley. This spectacular landscape, shaped by the Douro River, offers a unique terroir to the grapes, giving them aromatic characteristics of great finesse. The sunny and dry climate, combined with the shale nature of the soil, creates an ideal environment for the maturation of noble grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, which constitute the soul of Kopke's Port wines.

Traditional know-how serving excellence

Kopke perpetuates ancestral production methods, respectful of the fruit and the environment. The manual harvesting of the grapes, the crushing by foot in stone lagares and the aging in French and American oak barrels several centuries old are an integral part of the identity of the house.

A range of Port wines of great diversity

Kopke offers a wide range of Port wines, meeting the expectations of all lovers. Among the house's flagships, we find the Tawny Ports, made from a blend of wines of varying ages, offering remarkable aromatic complexity. Vintage Ports, produced only in exceptional years, are distinguished by their concentration and their exceptional aging potential. For lovers of younger, fruitier wines, Kopke also offers LBV Ports (Late Bottled Vintage) and Ruby Ports.

Kopke: A name inseparable from the world of Port

Kopke today asserts itself as one of the most prestigious ambassadors of Port wines. The house has managed to preserve its heritage while adapting to modern requirements, offering wines of impeccable quality that appeal to connoisseurs around the world.

The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning region in northern Portugal, famous for its spectacular landscapes, terraced vineyards and renowned Port wines. If you have the chance to visit this region, here are three activities not to be missed, outside of the wine theme:

1. Douro River Boat Cruise

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Douro Valley is to take a boat cruise on the river. You can admire the green vineyards, picturesque villages and majestic castles that line the river. Many companies offer half-day or full-day cruises, with or without wine tasting.

2. Hiking in the Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is a paradise for hikers. Numerous trails crisscross the vineyards and offer breathtaking views of the region. You can also walk along the Douro River or climb to the top of one of the many hills that surround the valley.

3. Visit to the village of Pinhão

Pinhão is a charming village located in the heart of the Douro Valley. It is an ideal starting point for exploring the region and hiking in the vineyards. The village is also known for its stations decorated with azulejos, ceramic tiles typical of Portugal.
