Rich of its history, the castle of the clos de Vougeot, if it could speak, would have certainly many stories to tell us between soil, wine and celebrity, it saw passing between, it is mature of the centuries and centuries of passionate or amateur of the wine. Famous for its wine, but also for its gastronomy, because it is there that are cooked the famous eggs in meurette!
The history of Clos Vougeot began in 1098 with the monks of the abbey of Cîteaux who decided to build buildings in the middle of the vineyards to meet the needs of their vast vineyard. The monks of Cîteaux Abbey cultivated with great intuition complex terroirs, identifying the Climats de Bourgogne, 9 centuries before their official and universal recognition.
In 1951, almost 500 years after the beginning of the history of the vineyard, the 48th abbot of Cîteaux, Dom Loisier, decided to build a manor house in the middle of these prestigious vineyards. A Renaissance style manor whose elegance echoes the severity of the original buildings. This is where the current form of the Château was born.
Unfortunately, in 1789, the building disappeared from the landscape of the great wines of Burgundy. It was only just thanks to the generosity of two great men that the Château was saved. The Château can thus thank the banker Gabriel-Julien Ouvrard and the merchant Léonce Bocquet for their help. A rescue which is worth to the generosity of this same Léonce Bocquet to give his name to the main alley of the castle.
In 1920, the deputy mayor of Vosne-Romanée, Etienne Camuzet, a wine owner, became the owner of the château until it was transferred to the Société civile des amis du château in 1944. In the meantime, against the backdrop of the economic crisis, a group of inspired winegrowers laid the foundations of what would become the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. It becomes a festive vineyard where the wine is not only worked but also savored.
A few years later, the castle is officially classified as a historical monument, and is therefore open to the public all year round. The Burgundian bans becomes a world anthem! Under the impulse of the young Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, the Château du Clos de Vougeot welcomes the Chapter of the Resurrection!
With the approach of a superb vintage on July 4, 2015, Burgundy reaps the consecration of its Climats by Unesco. After 10 years of struggle, this is a victory for the knights of tastevin.
From now on, the castle is also famous for its "oeufs en meurette" (a symbol among all the Burgundian cooking!). The Château du Clos de Vougeot is hosting the first World Egg Championship, on this symbolic day of the World Egg Day.
The Château du Clos de Vougeot is part of the prestige of Wines from Burgundy, they see pass between, it is mature every year of the great names of wine and gastronomy as well as celebrities and politicians. Last year, it was even the French president Emmanuel Macron who went to the clos de Vougeot accompanied by Angela Merkel.
It is for its history, for its fight for fame and prestige, but especially for the quality of the wines produced there that we have chosen to highlight the Château du Clos de Vougeot... If the walls could talk, they would certainly have many secrets to tell about this Château.
