History and Legacy
Drappier is one of the oldest and most respected Champagne houses, founded in 1808 and located in Urville, in the Côte des Bar region of southern Champagne. Its roots trace back to the 12th century when Cistercian monks from Clairvaux, under the guidance of Saint Bernard, built a cellar in 1152. This historic site still houses the Drappier cellars, providing a unique place for aging their exceptional Champagnes.
The Vineyard
The Drappier vineyard covers approximately 62 hectares, mainly around Urville. Pinot Noir dominates with 70% of plantings, followed by Pinot Meunier (15%), Chardonnay (9%), and rare, ancestral grape varieties such as Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Blanc Vrai, and Fromenteau (6%). These lesser-known grapes, revived by Michel Drappier over 20 years ago, bring diversity and uniqueness to the house’s blends.
Sustainable Viticulture
Drappier is committed to sustainable viticulture. The estate uses no herbicides or insecticides, relying instead on manual work, horses, and electric tractors to reduce carbon emissions. Around 27 hectares are cultivated organically and certified by Ecocert.
Winemaking and Cuvées
Drappier Champagnes are crafted with a focus on authenticity and purity. The house is a pioneer in sulfur-free Champagne production, offering cuvées like the “Brut Nature Zéro Dosage Sans Soufre.” Their dosage liqueurs are aged in Limousin oak barrels and glass demijohns for over 15 years, adding incredible depth and elegance.
Spectacular Bottles
Drappier is also known for producing some of the largest Champagne bottles in the world, such as the 30-liter Melchizedec. These giant formats are reserved for grand celebrations and make a spectacular impression.
Environmental Commitment
Drappier is certified Carbon Neutral, showing a strong commitment to reducing and offsetting carbon emissions through sustainable agriculture, energy efficiency, and reforestation.
Conclusion
Maison Drappier embodies Champagne excellence — blending tradition, innovation, and environmental respect. Their wines, crafted from a unique terroir and sustainable practices, deliver an unmatched sensory journey, celebrating both the heritage and future of Champagne.
