located 15 kilometres from bordeaux, in the southern part of the appellation, the larrivet-haut-brion vineyards adjoin those of haut-bailly. the name of the estate has undergone many changes over the two centuries of its history. initially called château de canolle, then la rivette, it took the name château haut-brion larrivet in 1874. the estate successively belonged to a bordeaux wine merchant and then to bordeaux wine lovers, the sons of mr. théodore conseil, who developed it. the vineyard then reached 50 hectares. in the 1930s, the estate was hit hard by the economic crisis and production was wiped out. in 1949, it took on its current name: château larrivet haut-brion, but it was under the impetus of christine and philippe gervoson that the estate was reconstituted, through the acquisition of original plots. major investments were made, and the wines gradually regained their former quality. from 1996 onwards, the fine vintages followed one another and the terroir was once again fully expressed: the larrivet haut-brion vineyard is indeed based on a clay soil composed of sand and iron alios. since 2007, the estate has been managed by bruno lemoine, general manager and winemaker. the 6 hectares of vines are located on a larger estate of about 10 hectares. the vines are about forty years old and grow between pessac and bordeaux on a terroir of gravel, sand and clay and on a limestone subsoil. the vines are worked in the traditional way with the constant aim of increasing the quality of the grapes to obtain the best fruit. the wine is then vinified and matured in the ultra-modern cellars designed by philippe starck, so everything is beautiful at château les carmes: the buildings as well as the wines produced there. the originality of this wine lies in its unusual proportion for the left bank of cabernet franc, balanced by merlot and cabernet sauvignon. the result is a rich, dense and harmonious wine. it has a beautiful dark ruby colour. the mouth is ripe, full and greedy. you can easily keep this bottle in the cellar for twenty years, it will be even more interesting and fine to drink. for the food and wine pairing, the great wine of château carmes haut-brion will be the perfect accompaniment to a fine red meat."
