Thanks to bold winemaking practices and a distinctive style, Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion has asserted itself in recent years as one of the most unique estates in the appellation and even in the Bordeaux region. Emphasizing whole-cluster fermentation significantly, the estate manages to infuse a particularly pronounced expression of fruit, fully justifying the trendy term "infused." The delicate touch of the tannins stands out with remarkable finesse.
The acquisition of the property by the Pichet family in 2010 also played a pivotal role. Resting on an original terroir adjacent to Haut-Brion, this early-ripening vineyard hosts a significant portion of very old vines, notably Cabernet Franc. The modernization of the winemaking facilities has allowed the estate to accumulate successes over the vintages, displaying an impressive progression that earned Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion its third star last year.
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion annually produces around 90,000 bottles of wine, reflecting the quality and controlled quantity of their production. With a planted area of 30.75 hectares exclusively dedicated to red grape varieties (Merlot 25%, Petit Verdot 1%, Cabernet Sauvignon 35%, Cabernet Franc 39%), the estate harmoniously extends to express the diversity of these grapes. Harvesting at Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is done manually, emphasizing the care given to the harvest and grape quality from the outset. The vineyards have an average age of 40 years, contributing to the depth and complexity of the wines, benefitting from the wisdom accumulated over decades in the vineyards. In keeping with an authentic approach, the Château does not purchase grapes, favoring complete control of the production process from the vineyard to the bottle.
From one vintage to another, the wines of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion progressively assert their style with increasing authority, captivating depth, and ever-growing brilliance. Originating from vineyards in the Martillac region, Le C des Carmes, predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, presents itself as a clear wine, delightfully fragrant (evoking strawberry, but the fresh, just-picked kind, the authentic strawberry, far from hydroponically cultivated ones). Its structure is elaborate, its form long and its character distinctly original.
The 2019 vintage of Carmes reveals a remarkable transparency of fruit, subtly evoking candied raspberry without ever veering into exuberance. The substance appears clear and sparkling, demonstrating a dynamic tension despite the pronounced smoothness that characterizes this exceptional wine.
