"considered the ""golden gate of the côte de nuits"", the marsannay aoc extends over the communes of chenôve, marsannay-la-côte and couchey. although the presence of vines is attested to as early as the 7th century, as is the case throughout the côte, the prestige of the vineyard has been recognised for a very long time. the abbey of bèze, the bishopric of autun, the dukes of burgundy and many others owned vines in this area. the wines were present on the table of louis xiv or louis xvi... certain climats benefited until the 19th century from a classification equivalent to the current grands crus. from north to south, the vines of marsannay extend over the best parts of the hillside and the foothills, between 255 and 390 metres above sea level, with exposures ranging from due east to due south. all of this on very diverse soils dating from the middle jurassic period: bedded sandstone, entroques limestone, oestra acuminata marl, the old ouche river bed or alluvial pebbles. the only village appellation that can express itself under the three colours, its typicity is that of the côtes de nuits, in a style close to the neighbouring appellations fixin and gevrey-chambertin. the marsannay appellation in red is intense in colour, with a delicate bouquet of red fruits (morello cherry, strawberry) and black fruits (blackcurrant, blueberry). the powerful and generous attack on the palate harmonises with a fat and long finish. the whites of marsannay exploit the whole range of citrus fruits and white flowers (hawthorn, acacia). the palate, often full and round, opens up with beautiful mineral lines, all in length. the reds and whites of the marsannay appellation can be drunk deliciously when young, but will reveal all the typicality of their terroir with time. as for the marsannay rosé appellation, their tenderness and fruitiness express vine peach, redcurrant... with this full, fresh and greedy mouth, so characteristic. ruby red color, a nose of red fruits, spices and flowers and a dense, structured attack, aromas of red & roasted fruits, present & silky tannins, long finish."
