founded in 1638, the château is one of the oldest medoc properties and became very successful in the middle of the 18th century, thanks to the innovation and enlargement projects of the owner blaise-alexandre de gasq. the french revolution marked its confiscation and division into three properties (léoville las cases, léoville barton and léoville-poyferré) which were classified as second growths in 1855. over time, the property changed hands and evolved. today, it has 97 hectares of gravelly soil planted with vines that are an average of 30 years old. the clos du marquis is much more than the second wine of château léoville las cases. generally made from the vines of the petit clos and the parcels outside the grand enclos (the origin of the great wine of léoville las cases), it has established itself among the best wines of the médoc. benefiting from the same methods of cultivation and vinification as the grand vin, it offers a superb balance between elegance and racy substance. in a full and generous profile, the finesse of the saint-julien terroirs comes out in its slender and refined matter. a wine with aromas of black fruits, blackberry and blueberry jam, the breeding underlines the beautiful fruit of the wine with a certain class. it should be left to rest for three to five years after bottling in order to allow its tannins to bond with its material in the most beautiful way, and thus reach a harmony worthy of the greatest.
