charmes-chambertin is an elegant, rich wine without being over-powerful. an extremely smooth beverage with lovely ripe fruit aromas which are characteristic of this exceptional wine. a true genius when it comes to vinification, bernard dugat acquired his first parcel in 1973, when he was only 15! gradually, the domain grew through successive purchases of grand crus, mostly in charmes-chambertin and mazis-chambertin, but also in the village and regional appellations. the wines truly reflect the gevrey terroir. above all, the aim is to allow the terroir to express itself. yields are limited in order to maximise concentration; a traditional and careful maturing in barrels is carried out for 14 to 18 months. aromas of dark cherries, licorice, peonies and sweet spices, framed by a deft touch of classy new oak, introduce the 2020 charmes-chambertin grand cru, a full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's fleshy and gourmand, its sweet, powdery tannins entirely concealed in an enveloping core of vibrant fruit. such is its underlying substance and incipient complexity, however, that i suspect its immediate charm is deceptive.
