in a title deed of the abbey of citeaux dated february 1365, the name "cloux des lambrey" appears for the first time, a spelling that disappeared over time and which today is written "clos des lambrays". on a milestone in the wall of the clos des lambrays sealed appears this same date as a reminder to the visitor in tribute to time. the clos des lambrays is located in morey-saint-denis on the prestigious côte des nuits. the village of morey-saint-denis has the largest proportion of grands crus. the clos, one of the few and most prestigious clos de bourgogne, is surrounded by walls and is located on a gentle slope on which the clos des lambrays vineyard rests, the oldest vines of which are over 60 years old. the clos des lambrays is planted with pinot noir on a very small area of about 8 hectares, a very rare but sublime production. located in the central part of the côte de nuits, the vineyards grow on well-drained clay-limestone soils. this appellation includes grand crus such as clos saintt-denis, clos de tart, clos de la roche or clos des lambrays. the wines of morey have both the mellowness and finesse of chambolle, and some of the power and structure of gevrey-chambertin. they are quite colorful, releasing powerful aromas of small red and black fruits (cherry, black currant). after a long ageing, the aromas are enriched with woody, spicy or animal nuances.
