"located in the heart of the côte de nuits, clos de tart is one of the five grands crus in the town of morey saint-denis. it is the only appellation of burgundy to have never undergone a division since its origin in 1141. today and since 1932, the almost eight hectares of the clos de tart and its eponymous domain belong in monopoly to the mommessin family. on this vineyard, which is 50 years old on average, the cultivation is done in reasoned struggle and yields are limited to 30 hl/ha. as for the breeding, it lasts between 18 and 24 months in 100% new oak barrels. during the first half of the 20th century, the wines of clos did not find much recognition among amateurs, slightly lacking in richness and concentration. since 1980, considerable efforts have been made in terms of quality, particularly in the very successful 1985, 1989 and 1990 vintages. but it was the arrival in 1995 of sylvain pitiot as a stage manager that really gave new life to the production. author of illustrious works on burgundy, including an authoritative atlas of the vineyards of this region, he was able to restore the domain’s reputation by signing magnificent vintages of intensity, finally at the height of the classification of grand cru! the estate, conducted according to the principles of reasoned agriculture, has recently reached a new stage: the vines are now grown in organic (not certified). silky texture, finesse, amplitude and structure are not lacking to describe this elegant nectar with the tasty aromas of cherry, raspberry, licorice, vanilla or violet, which is enriched with spicy nuances with age. if they open very slowly, clos de tart wines promise up to 25 years of aging."
