the niepoort family has been making port wines since 1842, considered to be one of the best in the country. the first property in the douro was purchased in 1987 and dirk niepoort began a new era in the business with the creation of the first redoma red in 1991. in recent years, niepoort has taken on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and has acquired two properties in other regions: dão and bairrada. a dream of dirk niepoort's, turris is a wine made from an ancient vineyard with over 130 years of untended, south-facing vineyards in cima corgo, douro, aged in 60 year old german (fuder) tuns from the mosel, before undergoing a 20 month bottle maturation period. an intense ruby colour. the bouquet reveals aromas of wild berries, herbs and spices as well as floral nuances that combine with notes of graphite to give this red wine the complexity typical of the schistose soils of the douro valley. on the palate, we find the niepoort signature: an elegant structure, good acidity and freshness. a long finish offers persistent minty touches.
