the gaja family has resided in piedmont since the mid-17th century. the first production of barbaresco was in 1859 by giovanni gaja. since then, 5 generations have succeeded each other in the production of this italian wine. angelo gaja represents the fourth generation and has renewed the style of barbaresco. the piedmontese is the most recognized italian producer in the world and his wine is sold in more than 80 different countries. his wines can be found on the tables of the greatest starred restaurants. at the age of 70, he is at the head of three estates: the historic family estate, expanded to 100 hectares in piedmont where he produces barbaresco and barolo, and two estates in tuscany. indeed, when angelo gaja took over the estate from his father in 1960 after studying oenology and economics, italy's wine reputation did not match the quest for great wines that the piedmontese dreamed of. he first perfected and revolutionized the gaja family's barbaresco before investing in barolo vineyards. his conqueror's soul is not yet satisfied. he became interested in the king of tuscany's grape varieties: sangiovese. in 1994, he acquired 25 hectares of montalcino where two 100% sangiovese wines are produced: rennina and sugarille. two years later, angelo gaja bought a property in the coastal region of bolgheri which he named ca'marcanda, "the house of negotiation". 110 hectares of vineyards were planted and high-end facilities were built. the reputation of angelo gaja's wines allows him to go beyond the conventional by planting chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon or sauvignon in the land of nebbiolo. ca' marcanda is a pleasant and elegant wine, perfect for an informal evening to which you want to give a touch of refinement. intense ruby red color, the nose evokes a bouquet of wild fruits with interesting notes of licorice and eucalyptus. in the mouth it is round, rich and dense with ripe tannins.
