alongside the large trading houses, some parcels of hermitage are still meticulously exploited by a few owners. marc sorrel is one of them, and his hermitage le gréal has now risen to the level of the greatest. in the early 1980s, marc sorrel took over from his father henri, who had decided in the early 1970s to vinify and bottle his own wine instead of selling it to the trade. when henri died, he took over part of the estate and bought other plots on the hermitage hill, thus totaling a little more than a hectare of vines. today, he cultivates with wisdom and passion his old vines in the most noble mas of the hillside. le gréal is a blend, as is its name, for le gréal is in fact a contraction of the names of two places: le méal (50 year old vines) and les greffieux (12 year old vines). rich and elegant, le gréal hermitage is a wine that is simply impossible to find: only 4,000 to 4,500 bottles are produced on average each year. it is composed of 90% syrah and 10% marsanne. the wine is aged for 18 to 24 months in barrels, and is neither fined nor filtered. a very powerful wine, to be left to blossom for many years in the cellar to fully appreciate it.
