welcome to domaine van volxem, one of the oldest and most famous vineyards in the saar valley, in the heart of wiltingen. it was here, on the steep, vertiginous schist slopes overlooking the saar, that the romans were already cultivating vines in the 3rd century ad. after having been for a long time one of the most famous wine-producing monasteries of the moselle, the estate was acquired at the end of the 18th century by a rich family of brewers from brussels, the van volxem. aware of the exceptional quality of these schist soils, facing due south in this region with a cool climate, and of the capacity of the riesling to express an incredible aromatic palette, between flowers, fruits and spices, the van volxem family progressively raised the whites of the domaine to the rank of the best wines in the whole of the former prussian empire. at the famous trier auctions, their wines were snapped up, and by the end of the 19th century, they were on the menus of the most prestigious establishments such as the adlon hotel in berlin or the ritz in paris: they surpassed in price and popularity such prestigious french wines as lafitte or haut-brion! the 2018 schiefer riesling is bright, floral and flinty with a citrus-scented nose. the palate is light, very delicate and filigree, revealing remarkable finesse and juiciness and a beautiful, well-structured finish with a nice grip. this 2018 is a round but dry and serious riesling saar that can be enjoyed even young. an authentic wine.
