the hartenberg estate is located in the stellenbosch region, 14 km north of the city and 40 km from the atlantic ocean. its viticultural vocation dates back to the end of the 17th century with the arrival of the first settlers. operated without interruption since, it was bought by the mackenzie family in 1987 who made it one of the very best estates in stellenbosch. very sensitive to environmental and biodiversity issues, the new owners have made it a little paradise for the tourist, and an obligatory stopover for lovers of great wines. the vineyard (99 ha) is located on the northeast flanks of the bottelary hills with north, west and east orientations. the variety of soils, exposures, micro-climates and ripening rates were taken into account in the choice of grape varieties planted. wilhelm joubert, in charge of the vineyard, takes care with the precision of a goldsmith to harvest each bunch at the right maturity. in the cellar, carl schultz, oenologist and manager of the estate, has state-of-the-art equipment and refines his cuvées with obvious care. throughout the range, hartenberg wines offer a very attractive quality of fruit with expressive and remarkably well-balanced whites and suave, fragrant and very elegant reds.
