Tasting of Viña Tondonia Reserva 2008
The Bodega :
For 144 years, four generations of the López de Heredia family have dedicated themselves to producing exceptional wines, true masterpieces. An aspiration that the winery's founder, Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, defined in the 19th century as the "Supreme Rioja".
The care of the vines, the scrupulous selection of the grapes, the ageing in oak barrels in deep underground galleries, and then the ageing in bottles have given rise to these wines with a bouquet of great delicacy and nuance.
The nose of Viña Tondonia Reserva 2008 is very elegant, fresh and with a touch of fresh herbs, starting to show the complexity of older wines that are sometimes still too young when they come out at more than 10 years of the vintage!
The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classic with extra freshness and all that is needed for long bottle ageing. This is the more "Tondonia" of the two vintages I have tasted at this time. There are hints of maple syrup, smoke, liquorice and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crisp and reveals the chalky character of the soils.
