an emblematic figure in the wine sector in Portugal, DIRK NIEPOORT
We had the opportunity to taste a small wine from the Niepoort estate, the "drink me douro 2017" today, it is a wine based on notes of confiscated fruit evolving on spicy and woody notes, very pleasant in the mouth. This is why I have decided to tell you more about the producer and the estate because I find it important to mention the meticulous work of Dirk Niepoort, who belongs to the 5th generation of traders and operators of the Niepoort estate. He worked for 18 years with his father, Eduard Rolf, until his retirement in 2005. The company mainly produces great red wines, a good selection of original whites and excellent portos. Dirk has decided to innovate in the family business, while preserving its traditions. He then began to acquire parcels of vines in different terroirs in order to be able to create a range of wines and signature ports, while pursuing fruitful business relationships with many winegrowers, who supply Niepoort with part of its grapes.
For him, an important step in his life was to acquire his own vines: 15 ha of new vines were first planted in the Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril areas, both located in Cima Corgo, a region that traditionally produces the best Port wines. In addition, 10 ha of vines over 60 years old have been carefully preserved. "Today, we own 62 ha in the Douro. Some of them are tenant farming," explains Dirk. We also have Quinta de Baixo in Bairrada, with 17 ha, and Quinta da Lomba, with 20 ha, in the Dão. All our vineyards are organic, while Bairrada and Dão are biodynamic. »
As for the style of Niepoort wines, it is a true signature and reflects the importance given to respect for the environment and rigorous viticultural practices.
