today we will speak about Vega Sicilia. But I will not present you all the vineyard. It is, for sure, the best Spanish domain. And it deserve an article on our blog of course, but today I want to speak you about a vintage in particular : the UNICO 2010 ! This is the new gem of Vega Sicilia !

Vega Sicilia Único is a legendary wine. One of those wines that every fan wants to taste, at least once in their life. A wine of limited production and only produced in the best vintages.

It is a blend made from the Tinto Fino variety, with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the oldest vineyards of the property belonging to the Valbuena de Duero winery, a farm on the banks of the Duero river with clay-limestone and alluvial soils.

Vega Sicilia is characterized by taking care of all the details of the production. Work begins in the vineyard. Pruning is done in green to eliminate the clusters and thus limit the production of each strain, obtaining grapes with a lot of concentration.

Harvesting is done manually, by selecting the bunches which are at their optimal maturity. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak vats, for 15 days at a maximum temperature of 32ºC. Once finished, it is discovered in oak vats where it performs the malolactic fermentation. In these tanks it rests for a whole year in order to clarify and rest the wine.

Vega Sicilia Único is aged for at least 7 years in French oak barrels made in the cellar of the cellar itself. It starts in a new barrel, and it turns to an increasingly used barrel with the intention of achieving a perfect balance between wine and wood.

Once bottled, Vega Sicilia Unico remains in the bottle for 3 more years before being marketed. A long process, which takes almost 10 years, to give life to a very special wine, a unique wine.

So, this 2010 vintage is the last one commercialized by the biggest Spanish domain. And it could be a big success. Rate 97 by Parker, he speak about it like this :

“I was surprised by the aromatics of the 2010 Único. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats and aged for almost six years. It feels quite ripe and somehow old style, dominated by ripe black fruit, with a rustic and earthy touch. It has an ample palate, concentrated and powerful, with some earthy tannins. 85,185 bottles, 3,362 magnums, 228 double magnums and 36 Imperials were produced. It was bottled in June 2016.”
