THE DOMAINE DES ROCHES NEUVES
The Roches Neuves estate was created in 1850. Today it covers 22 hectares in Varrains, in the Saumur-Champigny appellation for red wine and in Saumur for white wine. Despite its exceptional terroir due to its chalky subsoil composed of tufa, the Roches Neuves estate only really took off when it was bought out by Thierry Germain in 1992. This native of Bordeaux will undertake the conversion of the estate to organic and biodynamic and to raise the quality of its wines to the level of the best domains of the appellation. Saumur-Champigny La Marginale or Le Saumur-Champigny Clos Prieux are its star wines.
The charismatic Thierry Germain has defined a contemporary stylistic approach to Saumur-Champigny, which articulates the right maturity of the Cabernets and their aging in wood in different containers, while perpetuating an infused, floral and crunchy fruitiness from the Loire Valley. The enormous work undertaken in the vines (biodynamic, some plowed with horse) is illustrated from the simple cuvée of the estate, all in pure and digestible fruit. The range is now flawless, between the admirable Franc de Pied and La Marginale, so attractive and today perfectly suited to its breeding.
