The vineyard of Pouilly is located in the Nivernais country, on the right bank of the Loire river, covering 7 communes. The appellation Pouilly-Fumé owes its original name to the specificity of the terroir on which it is produced, a terroir based on sandy or gravelly terraces.
Located about 200 km from Paris, in the south-east of the Parisian basin, the production area of Pouilly-Fumé is located on the banks of the Loire River, which greatly influences the local climate. It extends over approximately 1,1200 hectares, with an annual production of more than 59,000 hectoliters, and allows only one grape variety: Sauvignon Blanc. It is moreover mainly the grape variety which distinguishes Pouilly-Fumé from the sister appellation of Pouilly sur Loire.
The Pouilly-Fumé appellation produces exclusively white wines which are distinguished by characteristic "flint" aromas, rich in minerality and citrus notes. Pouilly-Fumé wines can be drunk young, but some vintages have a strong ageing potential. One will note moreover the quality of the products offered by the Château de Tracy, the Domaine Didier Dagueneau or the Domaine Michel Redde et Fils.
