The Saint-Joseph vineyard extends from Chavanay in the north to Guilherand in the south. It covers, on about fifty kilometers along the right bank of the Rhône, 23 communes of the Ardèche and 3 communes of the Loire department.
The soils are light schist and gneiss on a granitic base, mainly exposed to the south/southeast. The climate of Saint-Joseph is continental, with hot, dry summers and regular rainfall in the other seasons. The wines of the St. Joseph terroir were already being sold in the 16th century and were delicious and tasty. They were appreciated at the table of the kings of France.
The production area is about 1000 hectares with an annual production of around 35,000 hectoliters. For the white wines, the vatting in open vats lasts 15 days and the ageing a few months. This very beautiful Saint-Joseph appellation shines thanks to houses such as M. Chapoutier, Delas frères, E. Guigal or Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Domaine Ferraton Père et Fils.
