The Hunter Valley region is a major wine tourism destination in Australia with its world-famous vineyards and it is gaining notoriety for its atypical wines such as dry semillon with great ageing potential.
The Hunter Valley is the northern region of New South Wales, two hours drive from Sydney. The Lower Hunter Valley is the world famous wine area for its Semillon. The area runs along the Hunter River to head west before the Brockenback Range. The river deposits sandy silt, enriching the soil in the vineyards. This area has been exploited since the 1960s and produces mainly white wines such as Chardonnay and Semillon.
The Hunter Valley Semillon is a very dry wine, with high acidity and low alcohol thanks to the early harvest. With Chardonnay, the producers of the region make opulent and viscous wines with striking buttery notes, aged in oak barrels.
