The Mosel is the Germany's best-known wine-growing region. It is also the largest in terms of production. It stretches from north to south along the winding river of the same name.
The steep south-facing slopes of the Mosel are ideal for growing Riesling, giving it optimal exposure to the sun. The generally cool climatic conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their acidity. The rocky outcrops and stony soils reflect the sun's rays and retain heat, creating a very warm microclimate in the best sites and facilitating excellent ripening. The white wine variety that ripens late and carries noble rot therefore benefits here from ideal growing conditions. The protected plots in the valley make the region one of the warmest climatic zones in Germany.
